My new boy doesn't know what millet is, so I've been offering his seed from my palm the past two mornings. That started because I interrupted feeding time in the aviary, had a long trip home, and then he didn't seem sure how to find his food. The evening he came home and yesterday he sat on my hand to eat, this morning he chose to stay on his perch and lean over.
He's also ended up on my hand a couple of times, so I praised him verbally but have no reward for him.
So my question really is how to go about taming, or hand taming more specifically. I'm somewhat presuming he'll gradually become tame once he's settled in, realises I don't want him for dinner, and decides if he wants my company or not.
I can continue offering him seed by hand in the mornings.
But otherwise I don't have a bribe.
So should I find how far away from my hand he's comfortable with, leave my hand there for a minute, then praise and remove? Aiming to gradually reduce the distance.
Should I use a dowel perch (bought for fetching him down from places), get him to step up on that and praise? Regardless of reward.
Not expecting anything to work fast, I know it's all at his pace, and I want to give him time to settle in. Just looking for some recommendations for non-millet lovers.
He currently hasn't played with any toys or tried any new foods. It's only his third day in the house, so he's still in the phase of mostly being quiet when any of us are in the living room with him. He perks up a bit if we go to chat to him, as in he'll stretch and sometimes show a bit of interest. He'll chirp to budgie sound videos if we're not in the room.
