I can't say he is a cobalt by looking at this picture. It good that the pairs have started to breed. Do you spot them mating? Hi Buddy, I'm just guessing that he is a cobalt, I could be wrong, but he is a couple shades darker than a skyblue so not sure what he is, and yup I catch the pairs mating everytime I go outside or even see them through the back window of my house and find them mating, hope I got some fertile eggs Ok finally Nestbox 6 has 1 egg, for the purpose of this journal we will call this "Pair Number 4" That's great So how many pairs are with eggs now?

Hi Buddy I moved all the budgies and nestboxes today from the aviary I bought to my aviary, there was a total of 15 adult budgies, 1 chick in the nestbox and 2 nestboxes had eggs, I took the eggs and the chick and gave it to a friend of mine to put with his budgies to foster the chick to one of his hens and hatch the eggs under his hens that have some eggs, only problem is that I don't know how old those eggs are and if they are fertile, I found a total of 7 eggs of which 3 are oddly shaped (2 being long rather than oval and 1 being almost half the size of a normal egg, don't think they would hatch but all three oddly shaped ones came from one hen) any reason why they would look abnormal.
Thanks Lushen

I wouldn't have risked adding more budgies to a aviary that already contains breeding birds. But then I wouldn't colony breed anyway. I hope it doesn't cause fights.
Some budgie hens lay long oval shaped eggs and others lay eggs that are almost round. It doesn't make any difference to the percentage that hatch. The very small egg is probably no good

My different hens have different size and shapes of their eggs. That doesn't make any difference unless the egg is very very small or overly de-shaped.

Ok out of the 7 eggs I gave my friend he found by candling them that only the 2 long oval eggs were fertile and the rest were clear eggs, so although those 2 eggs were oddly shaped they were still fertile, at least I learnt something from that, he also came home and candle my eggs in my aviary for me and found that many were fertile but 1 or 2 from each box were still clear, so would they turn out to be fertile in a few days or would they remain clear, I don't know, but we never remove any eggs, and just left everything as is

The clear eggs in the nest boxes are likely to be the ones laid last so still possible they are fertile so have you ome across anyroblems yet?

Yup that's what I also thought that the clear ones would probably be the ones laid last so I will leave them in the nestbox and see what happens, its a learning experience for me, so I'm not gonna remove anything, will let all occur naturally and if eggs don't hatch after 18 days from start of incubation, I will leave them in there for a little while longer and see what happens and maybe after one week I will remove them and crack them open to see if they were infertile or dead in shell

Pair 1 in Nestbox 1 is still on 5 eggs so I guess that she had finished laying and that's good cos I wouldn't want her to lay any more Attachments:
