I have been working on diet conversion for my birds since a few months. They are accepting new healthy food gradually: The grass, herbs, sprouts, veggie chop, cooked beans/grains.
Since yesterday, they tried out carrot, beet, capsicum seeds and left other veggies. They try out these veggies at the end right now, when all their tasty items are over from the food bowl. During this time, they go over to the food bowl, more times than their regular seed diet. Is it due to the fact that veggies amd moong digest quicker than seeds? They seem restless the whole time. I have observed them closely since yesterday.. they do eat stuff from the healthy bowl and don't just fool around.
Still, based on their actions, I end up feeling they might be hungry. Today, I've kept their seed bowl inside with three tsp of seeds there and they have been eating it since forever. How do I approach the change? I have taken a long time to get them used to new food before replacing their 2 meals of the day with non seed diet.
For the morning, I leave 2tsp of seeds overnight. Post that, the grass/fresh plants recently. For lunch, it's cooked moong beans, fenugreek, quinoa, yellow mustard, etc mixed with veggie chop and egg mash (these days twice a week - not sure how much they eat) for moult. They identify millet as food and love it. They started eating millet from my hand too, so I have removed it from the cage..and provide it in limited quantities. Evening, a few herbs / spinach alternatively in limited quantities. For dinner, I'm thinking about sprouting their seed mix with other sprouts mixed, so that it's closer to their seed (earlier I had been sprouting other seeds/grains).
They are unpredictable. They eat around 5 times a day when in cage and when outside its 4 times a day. I don't want to rush and mess things up. I have been setting the lunch cooked plus veggie chop first with morning fresh plants, that works well. Do I continue just with the replacement of 3 out of 5 meals for another week or so before replacing their dinner. Last time I tried it, breezie started screaming for seeds. I don't want frustration to build up and instead slowly replace the seeds with things they like. They are madly in love with moong beans! I do sprinkle a pinch of seeds over veggie chop and sprouts for them to dig in.
Any inputs welcome..
PS They look like a real addict to me.. obsessed and restless when they don't get seeds for a long time.
