The photos are of my budgie at age 11 months. When I got the baby, the cere was a lilac/blue colour then gradually changed to the colour seen in the photos. I ask because now, aged 14 months, a brown cere is developing. An iodine block is in the cage and whereas the cuttlefish is scraped but not consumed due to the amount left on the cage floor, the iodine is consumed. I’m hoping it’s a case of mistaken sexing originally and not looking like a testicular or thyroid issue. Most grateful for any words of wisdom and experience. Thank you.

That’s a relief. This is a link to the original photos when I first brought him/her home at 8.5 weeks. I was uncertain from the white rings around the nares and had been leaning towards female. 😂 budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/18349/gender-helpA tricky little bird to sex but a real character and so full of life and loves playing and we have a special whistling communication each day. I had expected some words, thinking she was male, but that would explain it. Not sure we’ll do a name change now. If everyone’s still sure she’s a hen, then I will relax and enjoy her cere browning up and stop worrying. Thank you.

Also, is it normal for the cere not to turn brown until 14 months of age? My hens in the past have hit that stage before a year old.

This is one of the original photos. wow! What a difference. You would hardly think it was the same bird, and I see no sign of nostril rings at all!

The blue/grey has been replaced with a lovely green/turquoise colour, which is very similar to the parents. I could see white rings when I brought the baby home. A very grainy photo taken today Can I confirm it is a hen please Hezz?

I was reading through the Genetics Masterclass thread today and think I’ll keep coming back to it and keep restudying it as it was fascinating but so much to take in. However I came across photos taken before and after the first moult of a bird, which is very much like what has happened to Jasper. He was rather blue and grey as a chick but now displays more green and yellow colouring and it looks like a different bird. I just wondered if this is common and how Jasper would be described? A yellow-faced what? I’m hoping to get much better at these genetic alleles and their mutations. Jasper has still got a very female brown cere and so has surprised us by being a hen, but the name remains as it’s the name of a Crystal after all. 😀
