I'm sorry to report the end of life for Goldie, the little yellow bird who came into my realm from point unknown on July 30, 2013. Yesterday was the last struggle, with a doctor's help, to remove a stubborn binding egg - our second go-around with this since mid-January. This time the anesthesia simply proved to be too much. She had never dealt with this problem in the past and had otherwise been practically issue-free. I have lost a real companion in life but am luckily imbued with memories and an archive of photographs, recordings, and videos. I thank all who welcomed me into the land of the melopsittacus undulatus. It made the uneasy transition to this new life so much better, back in 2013. Peace to all. James of NYC USA

So sorry to hear this. She was a special girl. I thought of her not long ago. Fly high Goldie. Thank you... I was often impressed by the impression she made so quickly on people not in the room with her. Some may remember that I resisted this incursion, but I happily, ultimately, relented. Mourning the loss of an individual now

So sorry about the loss of beautiful Goldie. All budgies are wonderful to be around but especially the ones that bond with us and become a real part of the family.

Goldie certainly had an interesting beginning (who knows what tales she may have been able to tell) only to land on her feet outside your window. I’m so sorry she has passed on, and in such a way. She deserved to live out her twilight years in the comfort to which she had become accustomed. Eggs are the pits for elderly hens. Rest In Peace, little Goldie. Your mission in life has been accomplished - another budgie convert.

Ha. Yes. She managed your last point well. Thank you Hezz. I'd created a little wordless picture book about her, and people loved it - understood at once. I will add that our last three years were particularly good - her adapting to using a jungle gym in our foyer and greeting me on it when I'd come in. She'd become a real parrot. In this New York apartment it gave her a perfect flight path with destinations at both ends. I was delighted with that. What kills me is the routine we had built. That tell-tale bell-ringing, mornings, in her home cage, under the covers, letting me know she was there for another day, and the evening flights back to the cage while screaming for sheer love of life. I'm reading that it's good to mourn full-out, and I'm doing so. The egg issue was a surprise, but once I realized the first was just that, in January, I knew some serious work was afoot. She'd never been to a vet before and never seemed to need one. I had to raise money to get her to the Aviary clinic on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The staff there turned out to be the best - up to and including the doctor who did save her - anesthesia, overnight, and all. I took every opportunity to enjoy her return. I was thrilled. Unfortunately, this peace was short lived when the dreaded egg issue returned this month. Her wings started vibrating at night, her bedtime hour was suddenly off again, and then the visual evidence started showing up again. I have to regale myself with the knowledge that this is no longer a problem. Dear little yellow bird. Thanks all for remembering her and her specialness.
