Hello everyone,
So I've been having some issues with my budgie Dove. Whenever she has free flight time she always tries to land in the cage of my guinea pigs. It's a problem because first off she terrifies the guinea pigs. But the biggest problem is that she's always trying to eat their Timothy hay. I always take her away from it but she gets very upset when I do that. So I was wondering if budgies can eat Timothy hay? I thought she probably couldn't but I would like to get a definite answer because if she does manage to get a few strands before I can get her out I want to know if she needs to go to the vet or not. Thank you!

Timothy hay is okay for budgies. However, if the hay in the guinea pigs cage is meant to be used for the bottom of their cage, it might be treated with something so I would not let Dove eat it. Budgies do love grass. You may be able to find wheat grass at your grocery store. You can also look for it in a kit that you can grow yourself at the pet store. Look where the supplies for cats are because people grow it for their cats. Either option will be safe for your budgie and Dove will love it. Watch it carefully for mold as you grow it and discard it if you see mold.
We'd love to hear more about Dove and see pictures also!

As long as it is clean hay, it is not a problem. Don’t know where you live, but if you are able to source some seeding grasses for her, this would be even better, or try growing your own. There are companies in some countries that make up seeding grass kits specifically for feeding to birds.

Okay thank you! She does love eating the Timothy hay so it is nice to hear that if before I can get her away she ate a bit it's fine.
