After not coming out for a few months, George came out tonight. He tried to fly about but kept landing on the floor. I put my hand on the floor and he hopped on. I was taking him towards his cage when he indicated that he wanted to go to Penny's cage, so he hopped off there. I had to leave him on the outside perch as I had to dress Eve for bed. When I came back in, he was on the floor again. Chipper and Max had joined him to keep him company. So I put him back in his cage Was it the full moon that made George want to venture out? Lovely George. It's nice that he wanted to come out and that Chipper and Max kept him company. Maybe it was the moon. It looked amazing here at about 7pm when it was really low in the sky. It was huge.

It’s lovely he ventured out Marianne Marlow. Has he tried again since or did it tire him?

He tried again today but landed on the floor. I think he needs a bit more practice, perhaps I should help him but I'm worried about him getting injured. It’s lovely he ventured out Marianne Marlow. Has he tried again since or did it tire him?

It’s good he has the desire to try. Hopefully he’s landing safely and not crash-landing on the floor. Perhaps it’s muscle memory and he’ll improve a little the more he keeps trying, although obviously he’s an older bird. I understand your concerns of him getting hurt though. Is he happy playing on the floor with Chipper and Max?

He's cranky and doesn't tolerate the younger birds well. He spends a good part of the day squiggling when birds get too close to him. As he doesn't gain much height he doesn't fall very far. His cage is the cosest to the floor of the 3 cages. It’s good he has the desire to try. Hopefully he’s landing safely and not crash-landing on the floor. Perhaps it’s muscle memory and he’ll improve a little the more he keeps trying, although obviously he’s an older bird. I understand your concerns of him getting hurt though. Hmmm, they’re probably a bit rambunctious for him. I think we all get more cranky as we age.

Well, it's been more than a year since George had his stroke. He's doing well, but he's slowed down a lot in his latter years. George stays in his cage for most of the day. Sometimes he comes out and climbs around the cage and very occasionally ventures to the roof of the cage and eats some seed. He cannot fly well anymore, his favourite thing to do is bash beaks with Peter or Bertie. When he throws himself to the floor, he only trusts me, so will get on my flat hand and let me lift him to his cage. He still sings a bit and will occasionally shout at me to come over and talk to him. I get small whistles back, so I assume it's some sort of conversation He will be approximately 10 next month - we don't really know his true age, we just estimated George and Basil at 1 year old when they arrived as they were clearly adult birds. When they arrived, their seed trough was full of dry couscous, no idea why, or even how they survived. Bertie, George and Iris from an hour ago

I am immensely impressed with your care of George, Marianne Marlow. It would have been easy to panic and rely on the Vet to make your choice for you. You chose a wiser, if scarier path. I had a similar experience with my Mr Hibs - whether it was a stroke or an injury I still don't know - and although Mr Hibs was seen by an emergency vet, I resisted the advice to have my boy put down. Hibs told me that he wanted to live and to get better and I listened. I'm so glad both Hibs and George are still with us.

On my last visit with Charlie at the vets, she did say she wouldn’t blame me if I thought Charlie should be PTS , she said a lot of people would choose to do that…. I know he isn’t out of the woods vet, but my boy isn’t ready to go yet he has been brave and at this time he is looking so much better….time will tell, but for now I feel I made the right decision for both of us….
