I'm glad George is doing so well a year on. You've taken such brilliant care of him Marianne Marlow and he looks really well and happy in the photo.

Gorgeous George has done amazingly well. It sounds like he is still enjoying life despite slowing down. You have indeed done a marvellous job with him and Penny and Lyra too, Marianne Marlow. There’s a lot to be said about us knowing our pets well enough to see when they’re able and wanting to fight through and live. So glad that George, Mr Hibs and Charlie are still here.

So many of us have been faced with the decision about 'what to do' when our budgie has been seriously ill. I recall when the vet told me Tweetie Pie had AGY and the only way he would survive was to give him a no seeds diet. I love my little guy and wanted him to thrive, not just survive so I found a good diet and have spent the time to prepare the food. Yes, it takes time but everytime I hear him chirping, I'm happy. At the time, the vet did say he might die and I should watch his weight and if started to go down, I should PTS. His current vet says he does not have AGY, he's just a little piggy, over stuffing and then throwing up. Kudos to you Marianne Marlow for taking such care of George and to you ladybird for your care of Charlie and to all those others who have known their budgie still had quality of life and took care of them.

I think we read again and again of how much we care for our birds and do all we can to give them a good quality of life and it’s so heartwarming the support we offer each other, sharing the good times and providing empathy and support when needed. I love this forum.

This is really lovely to read... so glad he's recovered.
I'd just come on to ask about strokes. Ben, who is aged 12-14 yo (at least 2 previous owners) had what I guessed was a stroke a week ago. He looked dreadful the first day, couldn't walk or fly and just huddled in a corner. I put water and food next to him so he didn't have to move and gradually he started walking round the bottom of the cage. I still didn't have much hope for him, but he was cheerful and singing so not in pain. Then he flew to the lowest perch, although he was struggling to balance when he got there. Now he's flying and walking mostly okay. His left foot is a little weak, so he's choosing to balance leaning on the side of the cage when he's on the perch.

So nice to read about him. Glad he’s mostly ok. The other thing that might work, if you buy a flat perch. They often go in the corner of the cage.

Good to hear that Ben is recovering, and hopefully continues to improve. Unfortunately, once there has been one seizure often others do seem to follow. The longer between them the better chance of full recovery. At his age he is doing very well.

Biggles Ben sounds like a fighter. I'm so glad he continues to have quality of life and he has you to care for him. I second the flat perch suggestion. It's best to provide one in addition to the normal perch for birbs that might struggle.

I have a flat perch in the other cage, I'll try moving it in. Only thing is both Bill and Ben do not do new. I tried a new swing one Christmas and all that happened to it for the next month is they both refused to go into the corner it was in until I removed it.

Typical. Put them both in now and they may open their wings to a new (?) exciting adventure in their lives! Mine go off things at times so I stop giving that thing to them for a while. The next time they see it it is like “oh, my favourite. Mean woman for depriving us!!!”

Biggles I'm glad to read that Ben is recovering. His experience sounds just like George's. George was paralysed on one side and couldn't even stand up properly. He would use his wing to lean on to keep upright. He doesn't come out much anymore and has periods of quietness. But he's doing okay, eating and drinking. He even beak bashes with some of the other boys. Also Iris prefers his company to some of the other rowdy boys. They will just sit together, side by side and nap. George was 10 years old on 12th July. I haven't posted much lately as I have been unwell with a cold and migraine at the same time.
