Thanks, I'll check back in a few months if I'm still uncertain by then!

Well, that does it then, a male he is! Now a new name is needed, although I've been calling him Birdie all the time!

He could be Birdee, I’m sure that was used as a name way back for girls

Help, Birdie has turned into a monster overnight! right up until yesterday, she was her usual cheerful self, happily coming out of her cage and sitting on my shoulder, or hopping about on the breakfast table, perfectly normal. Then today she sat very close to one of her toys and squawked continuously. If my wife or I came anywhere near her cage, she would show her annoyance by chatting angrily and even bit my finger hard, something she has never done before! it's heartbreaking seeing her like this. I don't know if it's connected or not, but she is also suffering from loose, runny poops, which an online avian vet told me is caused by a seed only diet. Other than that, we have no idea what has brought about this Jekyll and Hyde transformation. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you. Bob

Bob, I have been reading your journey to find a good companion budgie with interest. Did you decide if you have a boy/girl for sure and what name are you going with? Firstly, I will caution you about the online vets. They are typically (in the US) not avian vets and are really only looking for you to suscribe to their serviceb. When I first got my Tweetie Pie I used them once (I used "Ask" ). I told them Tweetie Pie had been home with me for 3 days, wasn't moving and I seldom saw him eat (sound familiar, everyone?). The online vet said he was sick and I should return him to the store. Fortunately, I didn't, kept looking online and found this forum. This is all to say that the advice that runny poops are caused by an all seed diet is questionable. Your budgie should get a variety of foods. (Granted, my experience with the online vet was not good.) Is your budgie going through a molt? My little guys personalities change when they molt. Can you see the pin feathers on your budgie's head? If you post a picture, we can help. Have you located an avian vet near you? If not, this website will help: www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803Many things could cause runny poops including a change of diet or something that causes stress to your budgie.

A moult can also cause poop and temperament changes. If you haven’t changed his diet, that cannot be the cause of a change in poop. In fact that statement is rather a stupid one to make. I think Tweetiepiesmom’s comment on what to expect, or not, from online vets is about spot on. I’m sure there are exceptions, but unless you had some experience with birds, or medical knowledge, they could tell you anything and you wouldn’t be any the wiser.
From here on, I do think you would be better making new threads in the relevant sections outlining your specific concerns. This would also be more helpful to others following on behind you who may have similar experiences.

I tried to reply earlier, but somehow it got lost! Anyway, thanks for your comments and, yes, hezz, I will continue this subject in the budgie health section. I have, however located an avian vet nearby, so will be contacting them later today.

An easy mistake to make. Good luck with the vet. If nothing else it will give you a starting point for potential health issues in the future. It’s always good to have a tame vet on-side.
