Chaz is unwell and we went to the vet yesterday. I couldn't find an avian vet but I travelled over an hour for an exotics vet which was the best I could do as she needed to be seen urgently. They examined her and said further tests were needed. I reluctantly agreed to a general anesthetic for her so they could take some blood for analysis. I thought I might lose her at that point but she came through ok. I was sent home with some probiotic and vitamin powder which is not much different to the guardian angel I was already using.
I have moved her to the travel cage as it's smaller and everything is closer. She is alternating between sitting on her perch sleeping, and sleeping on the floor of the cage, head under her wing. Her breathing is too fast and heavy. She is fluffed up. I have put a heat pad under her but I just don't know what more I can do whilst I wait for the result of the tests. It is breaking my heart to see her like this.
Thanks in advance.

I think you are doing all the right things, keeping her quiet, making food and water easily available. Is she eating? Millet is easily digestible so you might offer her some. Going under anesthesia takes quite a toll on them. Fortunately budgies regenerate blood quickly. Give her a couple days to recover but if she looks/acts worse, call the vet.

As tweetiepiesmom has said, you are doing everything that you can.
Keep her calm, quiet and warm and hope the vet can provide some answers.
Good luck x

I hope she starts perking up and meds help with a definitive diagnosis, so you deal with it

Thank you all.
I think she's recovered from the anesthetic, she's just the same as she was before I took her now. I've put her travel cage on the heat pad in her big cage with the door open but I don't want to put her back in it completely as she's hardly moved all day and I want the essentials to be easily accessible.
One thing I have noticed is she has become incredibly vicious in the last 18 hours. She was finger tame but was understandably distressed when I had to handle her yesterday. She was fairly compliant though and her bites had no force. Today she's really dug her beak into me so much that she's nearly drawn blood. Is that a good sign that she has some strength left in her do you think?

If she isn’t interested in eating her normal seed mix, a sprig of millet may help and also try soaking some of her seed mix for a few hours and giving her this instead. Soaking can make for easier digestion as well.
For her to be biting with intent which is unusual for her, I would read that as wishing/needing to be left alone.

I'd say the biting means she's a bit scared.

The vet phoned me at 8:30pm with the results. It's not good news. She has chronic liver and kidney disease. No obvious underlying cause like an infection which means there is nothing they can do. Given the readings the vet was surprised she was as well as she is.
All in all, I am left with only one option. Whilst she has her lucid moments, they are getting fewer and further between and she is clearly suffering. It will have to be tomorrow. At least I know I did what I could but I am devastated. Both buds within six months of each other. It was already too quiet with Alfie gone. I know Chaz misses him too. At least they will be together again soon.

Oh, that’s not good, and I am so sorry. . Did the vet not think that supplements would be of any use? The fact that she had become slightly aggressive towards you did indicate to me that she wasn’t having a good time, but I didn’t want to scare you unnecessarily.

I'm very sorry to hear the diagnosis.
How old is Chaz?
You know your budgie better than we do and I am sure you will make the right decision for her.

That is sad, the diagnosis, so sorry - there often seems no rhyme nor reason to things like this..

Oh I am so sad to read this, sending a hug to you at what is a very difficult time. A hard decision to make, but done with kindness, I truly believe that. I will be thinking about you xx
