I think Marianne gives iodine to her birds, maybe she can help, lemonade.

lemonade If: 5% iodine is 1 drop per 200ml of water. 12% iodine is 1 drop per 480ml of water. This assumes that a drop is the same size. I would do 1 drop per 500ml of water. My husband is a chemist and I ran this maths past him and he said it should be fine assuming it's iodine diluted in the same solution as Marianne Marlow uses. I'd imagine most iodine is always diluted in water.

We need the dosage for a suspected iodine deficiency, which is what we are considering for Pippin. What Marianne is giving is a preventative measure. The recommended iodine concentration given to me by a vet was 3 drops of 2.5% iodine tincture into 100 mls water. That works out to 30 drops of 2.5% in a litre or 1000 mls. 12% is 4.8 times stronger that 2.5%, therefore the number of drops added to 1000 mls need to be diluted by the same, and therefore should be 30 divided 4.8 = 6.25 (drops per 1000 mls), which equals 1 drop in 160 mls As far as the iodine being diluted in water, mine isn’t; it is in an alcohol solution.

Hezz I looked up the one Marianne linked to and it says it's diluted in distilled water. Its useful to know that either that or in alcohol is fine to give. lemonade The figures from Hezz make perfect sense and if a vet recommends a higher dose than Marianne is giving for just general health then definitely go for that. I hope it helps Pippin.

Thank you. I'll try that. I did ring my vet yesterday for advice but they never called me back.

Sorry I didn't comment on the dilution, I am rubbish at working these things out and usually just ask Hezz! Thank you. I'll try that. I did ring my vet yesterday for advice but they never called me back.

I rang my vet again on Friday to ask about iodine dosage and again they never got back to me. I waited incase they rang on Saturday as they were open but nothing. So on Sunday I just went for it and put a drop in the water and each day since.
I'm pleased to say the little man seems to be getting brighter, the clicking sound has been absolutely minimal, his hoarse and croaky tweets are back to proper chirps too! I hope this means he's on the mend 🙂

That is great news. I hope you have found the issue and the iodine continues to help Pippin.

I would not have been best pleased with the vet lemonade. Still, I'm glad that Pippin is doing better.

I'm glad the iodine is helping Pippin. It's very disappointing that the vet didn't get back to you.

I agree, they should have been able to give advice on the right dose of iodine. I would not have been best pleased with the vet lemonade. Still, I'm glad that Pippin is doing better.

It left me feeling like they didn't want to advise as they would make no money from it. I've noticed changes recently. I'm a very regular feature over there aswell due to Stanley. Anyway, little Pippin seems to be doing ok and that's the main thing

Unfortunately Pippin has taken a sudden turn for the worst 😔 he is really struggling to breathe this morning. I've given him a nebuliser treatment but think it's just a matter of time now

I’m so sorry to read this. Could steam in the room help him?
