Hi, I have a budgie named Rio. She is 3 y/o and a generally healthy bird. I make sure to keep her food and water fresh - all the basic health routines. However, this morning she woke up being lazy and tired. It got worse as the day went on, so we took her to a vet. We told them that she was vomiting, her droppings were white and runny, she wasn't eating, she was lazy and not moving around too much, and cuddled up to our necks when she was sitting on our shoulders. To note, none of this is normal behaviour for her. She was never found at the bottom of her cage, she nibbles on food drinks plenty, but always ends up vomiting. The vet prescribed us with antibiotics, but as of right now, she is constantly vomiting clear liquid. Basically what I'm asking is, will she be okay? Is there anything I can do to help her? Ive tried warming her up but other than that and the antibiotics, there's nothing I feel I can do.

Oh this sounds pretty worrying. Was it an avian vet you went to? other vets really don't know much about birds and will usually just prescribe baytril (antibiotic). You need to keep her warm, cover her cage on 3 sides. Hezz has recommended this in the past: Electrolyte solution: Home-made Lactated Ringers electrolyte solution for sick birds (rehydration) • 8oz warm water • ½ tablespoon sugar • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda Mix all together in a jar, stir well and refrigerate. Will keep for 2-3 days in fridge.

Will keep for 2-3 days in fridge. Update: I made the electrolyte mixture yesterday but instead of sugar I used honey. She seemed to like it and drank ~1mL of it in different intervals. Put her to bed last night with a heating pad (low setting) on top of her cage and a blanket to insulate the heat. When we uncovered her, she was doing much better! As of now, she is not feeling 100%, but she isn't vomiting anymore. She is eating, drinking, flying, preening and sleeping (on one leg unlike yesterday). Her droppings have normal colours now, but are a bit watery still. The vet I went to wasn't an avian vet specifically, but has had years of experience with avian pets. He had perscribed an anti nausea medicine and antibiotic. The hardest part is trying to feed it to Rio. The poor girl has antibiotic all over her face and looks dishevelled! I think with a bit more rest and time she will recover

That sounds much more positive than your previous post, thankfully. Honey in the electrolyte solution if fine, and I’m glad Rio seems to have responded. Keep the heat up to her for a couple more days but in such a way that she can escape from it if she doesn’t need it.

She’s doing great!! She’s back to her normal self. She’s full of energy, chirps, appetite, and her droppings are normal. Vet recommended that we continue to give her antibiotics for another 3 days. Still keeping her warm on and off and giving her nap times just to recharge in case she needs it. Thanks so much for your help!!!
