Thought I'd start a new thread about this as didn't want to flood Hezz's thread with it. When I was on my journey to secondary school, I used to spend some of my lunch money on a bag of bon bons to eat throughout the day. There was a sweet shop on the corner with lots of jars of different things like cough candy, bon bons, pear drops and cola cubes I don't want to hijack this thread, but, my friend gave me a website the other week with lots of sweets from when she and I were young, think they're under the "retro" section, brought back so many memories. onepoundsweets.com/

There was a little newsagent/sweet shop on my way to primary school, (gosh I loved that little shop) where I used to spend my thruppence or sixpence (old money before decimalisation).
I liked strawberry bon bons Marianne.
Do you remember lucky potatoes? So called because there was a little plastic toy hidden somewhere in it.
Also McGowan's penny caramels, which were so big when I was young, we had to hold them in our hand and break them in half on the kerb 😂 Goodness me, the memories. I'm showing my age.

Yum! Loved Bon Bons! Sherbet pips, jazz balls, cola cubes, wham bars, pear drops…all remind me of the 80’s and just aren’t the same now. I can remember penny sweets and even halfpenny sweets when you could pick them yourself - chocolate mice, blackjacks, fruit salads, bubblegum footballs, flying saucers, pink shrimps, jelly fangs… blast from the past! I remember the necklaces and bracelets you could eat too. My siblings used to have giant hard-boiled dummies and gobstoppers but I was never allowed. There’s a place local to us that makes up boxes of retro sweets and delivers them but the price!!

You are the same age as me, so I remember all of those! Tried to find some flying saucers the other day as wanted Eve to try them but could not find any! ugh, those necklaces were rank. I remember kids in school would bite it so it flicked at another kids neck from the back in class. Yum! Loved Bon Bons! Sherbet pips, jazz balls, cola cubes, wham bars, pear drops…all remind me of the 80’s and just aren’t the same now. 😂😂 Don't knock it till you've tried it, they were lovely, the brown stuff, from memory, was slightly cinnamon tasted.
IF, you can still get them now, I'll bet they're not as good 😪

I read the other day M&S were rebranding their midget gems to now call them MINI gems incase they offended people with Dwarfism.
Good God, they've been midget gems since time began and I've never heard anyone complain before.

Marianne Marlow, that was always a bone of contention with a work mate of mine, he ALWAYS put salt in his porridge, I put SUGAR. My Mum used to put salt in hers. They say Salt in Scotland Sugar in England 😂

Flying saucers aren’t anything like I remember but they stock them in Sainsbury’s Marianne Marlow. www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/all-sweets-/sainsburys-flying-saucers-My daughter and her boyfriend are both vegetarians too and she bought a lovely box of vegan retro sweets from Etsy to take with them on their holiday to a Shepherds hut last September. They were vegan but not gluten free so I didn’t get to try any but they loved them. Ridiculously expensive mind you.
