Hi, would like a bit of advice. I'm thinking of breeding again and would like to use Teddy as the Daddy Co's he's a pretty boy however he is six years old, is this too old for a male. Also i would have to get a new hen because i only have his sisters, what is the perfect age for the female to start. Sky was two when i bred her, what is the starting age. I would obviously quarantine her and then there would be the introductions and bonding. I will breed them indoors and then re-introduce them to the aviary in time with the exception of hand taming a couple for my grandson, can anyone see any problems with putting them back into the aviary. Thanks

Thanks i am breeding with an albino cock that was born in 2006,have 5 youngsters off him this year so far. i wouldn't use a hen under 8 months at the earliest, and only then if she's fit and in breeding condition. there should'nt be any problem returning birds it the aviary, although i don't like moving hens from a breeding cage to a flight, prefering to move them to the nursery cage with the youngsters for a couple of weeks to get their strength back

Hi Skysmum! (sorry I don't know your real name!) I would recomend getting a female when its about two years old. However you may want to get one when its a bit younger (roughly 1 yr 11 months or 1 yr 10 months) so to allow settling in, pairing up and getting her into breeding condition. (My birds take quite a while to pair up and get into breeding condition!) With Teddy, I have heard that if you have a really good breeding male he can be fertile up to 6 years of age however I'm not sure if this age cock will have fertile eggs all the time if at all. I had a male that was paired up for a long time and was only given the chance to breed when he was 6 or 7 and he didn't produce any fertile eggs. Although it could have been the female but she was only about 3-4 or so. In a really good breeding pair the female will be fertile up to about 4-5 and a male about 6 years of age. Hope this helps!
