It was time to take my two little guys in for their annual check up. Their vet had moved but luckily there is an avian vet nearby so she'll be their new vet. I checked her out and she has excellent credentials. She's in a practice with other vets who treat dogs and cats. While I was there people brought in an Amazon, a GCC and some budgies. Someone also brought in a found budgie which I found out they will take care of and rehome. The new vet has 9 budgies of her own. She said both my guys were in excellent health (yeah!). She thought Tweetie Pie may not have AGY since its been over a year since he was diagnosed with it and most budgies die very shortly after they get sick with it. She thinks he may have another yeast and/or finicky digestive system especially since Buddy didn't get it. Anyway she said to keep feeding him like I am and he should live to a ripe old age. She also took his leg band off which I asked her to do. Too many accidents with leg bands! Question: I've read posts where people are getting a new cage. Wondering why? Is there a time when I should replace my guys cage?

Excellent news about their health, tweetiepiesmom. I don't think there's any particular timeframe for a new cage. I bought a larger cage back when I got Peri because he and Munchy would likely be moving into the same cage together so I wanted to make sure they had plenty of space. Then when I got Indie I didn't have a cage at all so I figured I might as well go for a flight cage. Then I ended up getting a spare cage when Munchy came home because I needed to quarantine him, the travel cage was a bit rubbish for quarantining, and I wasn't sure if he would want to share with the other two. He didn't, so then I ended up getting another spare cage when I needed to quarantine Pippin. I think from a replacing a cage perspective it's mainly only if you want to upgrade the size or if your current cage is showing signs of damage or too much wear and tear.

It's a great feeling when a vet tells you that TPM. I'm pleased for you, and the boys 😘😘

Fab news, glad to hear they are in good health.
Regarding the cage, usual reasons to replace are: want a bigger one, current one is broken/rusty/hens have nibbled it too much.

Great news TPM and a relief about Tweetie Pie and the AGY. Your new vet sounds very knowledgeable and experienced - anyone who keeps budgies always gets a big tick from me

I put the guys in their travel cage yesterday at 10am and we didn't have to leave for the vet until 2:30pm. That gave me the opportunity to remove everything from the cage including toys and perches. The cage got a very thorough cleaning. Perches and toys were cleaned. When I put it all back together, I rearranged everything and gave them some new perches and some new toys. They are quite happy this morning chirping and singing to each other. Today I'll thoroughly clean the travel cage, put it away and hopefully won't need it for another year.
Thanks for letting me know why you've gotten new cages. I did a good look at their current cage and it still looks good!

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. If their cage works well for the two of them and is still in good condition, then all is good. Good news about the health check. 👍 I felt at the time that the other vet jumped on the AGY bandwagon a little quickly without following through. PS I was a little concerned when I read the title, thinking that maybe AGY had reared its ugly head (again).

Thank you, Hezz. I have been questioning the AGY diagnosis since its highly contagious and Buddy has shown no symptoms. They both eat together, play with the same toys and kiss each other. The other day when they were eating their sprouts, Tweetie Pie had a sprout in his beak that Buddy decided he wanted. Buddy reached over and grabbed it from Tweetie Pie. My sweet little timid guy just kept on eating without fuss. I on the other hand sat there and laughed! My boys have forgiven me for grabbing them and taking them to the vet. They've been out flying around and have even been sitting on the perch beside my chair.

tweetiepiesmom How did they diagnose Buddy with AGY? Sky had a crop swab and dropping sample. They said that they found it in his crop and a tiny bit in his droppings. he has odd droppings, they were more brown than the other budgies and slightly looser.
