Hi all. I apologize for my first post on this forum to be like this, but I need help. A week ago, I rescued two female budgies from a not-so-great owner. The two birds were about a year old and had been kept in a hamster cage and fed solely treats their whole life. I have never kept birds before but I love birds and wanted to give them a new shot at life.
They’re very skittish and won’t let me anywhere near them. I had noticed some tension between the birds for the past few days, with the larger one pecking the eye of the smaller one a few days ago. They seemed to recover fine, however.
Today, I came home and found the smaller budgie on the floor of the cage. One of its legs is completely lame and it’s wing is at a bad angle. It screams when I even slightly approach the cage.
I don’t know what to do. Between buying everything, I don’t have the money to take her to an avian vet right now. I have already spent close to $200 on these birds - which is fine and expected, but I am sure a vet visit with this extreme injury would be another few hundred. I do not have the money.
I have been crying all night. Their new cage literally comes in tomorrow. I don’t know what to do. I can’t even hold her to examine her injuries as she won’t let me. I hadn’t even bonded with her before this. Even when I am not near the cage, she lets out painful screams every few minutes. She is eating, however, which is a good sign. Please give me guidance on what to do.

What a terrible, heart-rending thing to happen, I'm so sorry, that's so upsetting.
I cannot offer you useful advice but there will be someone along who can. It seems clear to me though that your two females cannot be kept in the same cage together.
So sorry for you and for your little friends. I just wanted to say that, I hope for the best possible outcome for you all.

You need to get the injured bird out of that cage asap. Yes, it is hurt and yes it is going to scream and yes you may, will be bitten. This is going to require a vet, no way around it as the bird is obviously in pain. You need a secure place to put this bird, even a cardboard box, lined with something soft, not a towel as the claws may get caught. Have this all ready before you go to catch her. You need to throw a small cloth, tea towel over her, pick her up with the wing in its natural position. Left out it will possibly be injured more and need removal. Best if you can tape the wing to her body, all the way around, even sticky tape will do. The leg may be broken, so be careful of that as well. Once isolated, get her to an avian vet asap to be seen as an emergency. They will assess and treat as needed. Anything less is too cruel to be considered.

Most vets in the US understand that the bills can be quite expensive and will work with you to set up an affordable payment plan. Mention that when you call the avian vet for the appointment. So sorry your new feathered friend was injured. Hoping for the best for you and the budgies and so nice of you to rescue them from a bad situation.
