Did anyone watch this on Monday night 😪😪 Made for very upsetting viewing. We buy milk and think nothing of it, it was a real eye opener.

I don't think I could watch it. Is it time for me to go vegan?

I was looking for ethical milk suppliers near me, but couldn't find any.
Think I'll be buying Organic milk in future in the hope that maybe I'm making a small difference.

Silly question maybe but what is the difference with organic milk? I was looking for ethical milk suppliers near me, but couldn't find any. Think I'll be buying Organic milk in future in the hope that maybe I'm making a small difference.

Found this Marianne:-
It’s better for the cows A cow has a natural lifespan of 20 years or more. However, cows reared in intensive dairy farming systems are often exhausted and culled at four years old because they have spent most, or all, of their lives indoors and are chronically lame or infertile, according to Compassion In World Farming.
Organic standards ensure that dairy cows live outside during grazing season, are fed a healthier diet and are housed in well-ventilated, straw-bedded sheds so they live healthier and longer lives.
An intensively milked cow is forced to produce up to 10 times the amount of milk than it naturally would. Daylesford organic farm manager Richard Smith says: “It can only produce that [much] if it’s fed large amounts of protein... Eating high protein, high energy food puts them under intense strain - it makes the cow stressed.”

Thank you jellybean, I'll definitely look into buying organic milk. We use a lot of it as Eve drinks milk, her and husband have it on cereal and I drink a lot of coffee. I only have almond milk on cereal, but that tastes horrid in coffee.

It was a documentary on animal slaughter that turned me into a veggie at age 13, so I don't really need to see this one. I'm aware that a lot of things involving mass production of animals and animal products are grim

I wonder if the designation for "organic" varies from country to country. I would hope not not because our countries import and export so many products but there doesn't seem to be universal standards. In the US organic milk comes from cows that are allowed to roam free. They are not given growth hormones or antibiotics as a routine preventative. They are also fed organic foods that are free from pesticides.
There was a big controversy a few years back concerning eating meat from animals (including chickens) that are fed growth hormones so they mature faster. It is thought that these growth hormones stay in the animals and the milk and are consumed by people. The fact that currently children are going through puberty at an earlier age, especially girls who consume a lot of milk was blamed on the consumption of milk containing growth hormones. I don't recall that this was either proved or disproved but many people switched to organic milk. I don't consume milk except for what I might cook with which is not much. I do eat cheese and put cream in some items and I always buy organic.
As the saying goes in the US, "that's my 2 cents worth".

It was a David Attenborough's programme Extinction: The Facts in Sept 2020 that made me switch to organic. I cried through all of it is was so awful. Large amount of rain forest is destroyed to grow soya to feed to intensively farmed cows around the world, including the UK, and there were so many other awful facts.
It is more expensive buying organic milk but we don't really pay the real cost of any of our food because damaging the environment is free. I buy organic fruit and vegetables and everything else that I can buy an organic version of. It varies between shops but there are more and more organic products all the time. I also try to buy produce grown as locally as possible, which means sometimes there is a conflict e.g. organic potatoes from Egypt vs potatoes grown in the UK. Our shopping bill has gone up but it is worth it to try and reduce the harm that we are doing. We are vegetarian and eat so much veg that it's more important that we buy organic rather than someone who only eats veg occasionally. Now we have an allotment we'll have our own organic produce.
I know my contribution on its own doesn't make a huge difference but I couldn't do nothing. And the more people that make the change the bigger the difference becomes.

So true criswell! I have noticed that the more people buy organic, the price comes down and more stores are carrying organic and a larger selection of organic.

It's free range milk for me from now on, I was so upset and sickened by what I saw on that programme.
