My son wants an outside aviary, but I'm watching the wind, and wondering what you do in extreme weather.
Do you gather up all the birds and bring them inside?
Looking at a number of the aviaries, they looks like a wooden structure on a concrete floor-I presume they must be secured or they'd just tip over with winds like this.

I'm sure members who have aviaries will be along to give you advice.

I lived a few years in Arizona where there are very strong wind storms. One morning I arrived at work just when one of those storms hit and I struggled to get to the building door. I walked past a little bird flapping his wings madly to try to make progress against the wind but it looked like he was standing still. I thought about reaching out, grabbing him and putting him in the shelter of the base of a tree but then decided he'd be so startled that he'd take off and not make it. I do hope he was ok but most likely he became exhausted and blew away.
Most people who had aviaries built them with 3 solid walls against the house with an indoor aviary connecting so the birds could be brought in during bad weather.

I don’t know where you live, but most aviaries that I have seen and heard about in the UK have an outside flight area and a smaller indoor “shed” structure for nights and extreme weather. The indoor areas have often been repurposed garden sheds, summer houses ect. They most certainly do need to be fixed, usually to a concrete base.

Yes, definitely need to be fixed. I recently saw an entire shed got blown over in the storm and all the cockatiels flew away.

Thank you! UK, so no major storms normally. From how protective he is over his budgies I suspect he'd have moved them all inside the house with yesterday's storm. Maybe I should suggest he clears the garage and we can look at converting that!

Maybe I should suggest he clears the garage and we can look at converting that! They will still need some extra outdoor uncovered space for sunshine and flight time, but otherwise, why not?
