Hi I'm new to budgie breeding.
I would like to attempt to get two of my budgies to mate at some point in the future. I have four budgies, one is a rescue budgie who is an older male and ready for breeding but he just wants to be by himself it would seem. I think its because his been alone for so long that he is very territorial and will not bond with other budgies although he is very tame and I can let him out of the cage often. Ideally I need an older female to pair with him and there are no older budgies available for purchase only young budgies.
The other three budgies are to young for breeding at this time. I have one female and one male the other I'm not sure about because the cere is not colored yet.
They all hate each other and always fighting so I started to separate them seeing if I can get bonding pairs but none of them bond. When they are in separate cages they all start climbing the walls of the cages chirping to one another then when I get them out to socialize with each other they start fighting again. I just can't win
I've now got them in pairs, two in each cage.
I'm going to buy two nesting boxes to put on the side of there cages. Would this encourage them to bond and then eventually mate?

Well I have some good news to report. I've managed to match a bonding pair two young budgies although they are a bit to young to be breeding but at least they are bonding, its possible that the bird I wasn't sure about may just be female the other is male. Its all progress. The next thing on my list is a nesting box "just encase" and some red mite treatment just encase I need it. Its always good to have this kinda stuff on hand because you never know. These two are in the cage together without the others.
The other two budgies in the other cage the older male is not one bit interested in the young female budgie and she is constantly climbing the walls of the cage wanting to get to the other cage where the boding pair are but I will not let her in there because fights start kicking off between the three of them. The older male totally ignores her.
I may need to look for a suitable male for her.

I would suggest, as you say they are a bit young to breed yet.. do not put anything in there that could be used as a nesting box

I am pretty eager to get some baby budgies but not worth the risk breeding immature budgies. I will have to wait... Its early days yet so more budgies may come my way that are suitable for breeding.

All four budgies are in the same cage now its a much larger cage as well and all 4 are bonding even the older stubborn male bonds with the younger 3 but he still likes to be on his own perch away from the others. He makes beak contact with the others from time to time.
I might be getting an older female budgie to put with the older male so they could potentially become a breading pair.

I have decided I'm not going to breed my budgies for many reasons and I'm happy with the four I have. I may get some finches in the near future to put with them once I have built the large indoor aviary.
