Hello! I have two parakeets, the first one (Disco) I rescued off a fence.. so I didn’t know the gender. When we got him his cere was brown, so after doing some parakeet gender research, I assumed he was female.. but shortly after we got him, his cere change to a bright blue.. but I never gave it much though. Now it’s a year later, and we took him to the vet today and they informed us it’s a boy! Shortly after we got Disco, we got another one named Frosty, who has been trying to mate with Disco.. but Disco won’t have any part in it. We assumed it’s because there was just no nesting box in the cage.. but after the vet visit we figured out it was just because it wasn’t possible lol! Anyway.. we are hoping to get babies.. is it safe to get a female? Disco wants no part in anything.. he doesn’t regurgitate on anything or act like he wants to mate.. and him and Frosty are pretty bonded, although frosty really wants to mate with a female.. is it ok to get one? Also, if the female and frosty do mate.. is it ok to have Disco in the same cage as them? He’s not an aggressive bird at all.. but I’d like some opinions on it! Also.. Frosty sits on my shoulder a lot and comes to me at the cage whenever I’m near and he mimics words.. will him or Disco not be as bonded to me if I add a female? Sorry.. it’s a lot of questions lol! Thanks!

Getting a hen is fine, but if you are wanting to breed your hen and mate are going to need their own space, own cage, regardless of how “unaggressive” the third bird is. Adding a hen t the mix will change the dynamics hugely and you never know how individual birds are going to react under different circumstances. For all you know, the hen may set her sights on Disco and these two may end up being your pair. You never know, and you don’t know how another bird is going to change how much the other two wish to interact with you.

Thank you for the information!! Is it ok to just have a female in there with them even if I don’t breed them? Or is that still not a good idea…

Having a cage of mixed genders is fine as long as the boys don’t start fighting over the hen.

Thank you!! We might get one then.. would it help if we got two females that way both Frosty and Disco have a mate? Or is just one okay? Sorry for all the questions..

One or two, whatever you feel comfortable with, because there are no guarantees that each male will pair with one hen. You may end up with the hens not interested in either boy, the boys staying together as mates, the hens not getting on with each other, or happy with each other’s company only, or the two boys fight over one of the hens. So much depends on the hens you end up with as it is they who determine what the flock dynamics are going to be.
