Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum and overwhelmed by how much you all know about budgies! Desperately hoping that someone might be able to share their knowledge with me.
We have a 1-year-old budgie who is super tame and lives out of his cage 90 per cent of the time (I work from home, so he has free range around our apartment and lots of company). Over the last few days, he has suddenly stopped flying. Two nights ago he jumped off my shoulder and flapped his wings to fly down to the floor but he just crash landed. I thought it was a one off but he did it again a couple of hours later. I took him to the vet yesterday who checked him for broken bones and also tested him for a range of illnesses, but she couldn't find anything wrong. He found the vet extremely traumatic.
He's otherwise normal -- eating, playing etc. He's a little more subdued/cranky than usual. My best guess is that he may have injured himself in some way that isn't a broken bone -- maybe he's sore, bruised, I don't know. I'd be really keen to hear if anyone has experienced anything similar with their birds and what the cause was/what happened afterwards (like did they recover, how long did it take etc) -- it's almost like he's just forgotten how to fly. He now runs all over the house instead of flying, which is a bit weird. He's moulting a little bit but I haven't seen any flight feathers come out and I think the vet would have noticed if he'd lost a huge number while she was checking his wings.
Would really appreciate any advice you might have.

Hello and welcome to you and your budgie.
Can you upload some photos of your budgie? especially what his wings look like at the back?

Hi, thanks so much for your reply. Yes, sure -- not sure if I've done this correctly? I've tried to post three photos so you can see his wings clearly. The vet also checked the alignment and said they looked normal (I should clarify that I did take him to see an avian vet). The vet was reassuring that he doesn't have a major injury, so I guess I was hoping to hear if anyone else here has experienced a similar situation with their birds and if so, what the cause was and how the situation resolved. It's a bit of a mystery. Open to any and all thoughts on the topic!

The flight feathers seem fine, there is no glaringly obvious reason why he is not able to fly if he previously has been. If the vet can’t enlighten you then I’m not sure we can either. It would seem that it isn’t that he is refusing to fly but rather that he can’t.
