i noticed this morning that Pip is all fluffed up! He’s flying around and eating and drinking as normal still. Should I be worried?

Hello and welcome! Handsome budgie! How are Pip's droppings? And how do they currently compare to previously?

You're right to take an early interest in any changes in condition in your budgie as illness can progress very swiftly. That said, if Pip's behaviour is otherwise the same as normal including his feeding and his droppings, it's hard to say what is going on. How old is Pip? I get the impression his fluffing-up has only be going on for a few hours, is that correct? Pip may simply be sleepy. It will help if you can supply more pics and a video will be especially helpful. Some of the more knowledgeable forum members may then be able to assist.

If you feel he's fluffed up and not as active then to me that is a reg flag and I'd consult an avian vet.

He does have a truck-load of pin feathers, so obviously has just been moulting. Growing those new feathers can be a draining business. I have to say that he doesn’t look obviously ill to me. Will he eat some hard boiled egg, or dry egg food? Both are good for adding a bit extra protein to their diet which will go some way towards replacing all the energy used to grow those new feathers. If he isn’t wheezing or tail bobbing, poops look normal (even they can be a bit off during a moult), no other obvious signs of being sick, then I’d be inclined to blame the moult for his day of inactivity. Some moults seem to hit them harder than others and can make them grumpy, tired and lazy. Just monitor him for the time being to be sure that he doesn’t show real signs of illness, and give him that extra protein boost to his diet.
