I picked it today when out for grass for the boys, but it's something I've never seen before and wondered if it was safe to give them.

I'd say that is wheat.
It looks a lot like something that was growing in my garden, which I identified as wheat. Chocobo made short work of it!

No expert, M, but it looks like wheat to me as well. As far as I have been able to find the only grasses you need to be concerned about feeding are those ornamental grasses, as they are supposed to potentially contain some toxins, but that could well be as toxic (not!) as our budgies eating apple pips. How many apples a budgie would need to eat for the toxin to have any affect? Well, for a 100gm bird it has been estimated to about 50 seeds. www.queenslanderaviaries.com/aviaryupdates/can-apple-seeds-kill-my-bird Sorry, JB, off on a tangent there, I think your fellows might just love a nibble on that lovely fresh seed head.

Thanks everyone who answered, I'll put it in with their grass bundle this morning and report back later.
Hopefully a little something different for them to try.

Sadly there were no takers for the wheat, it went in the bin tonight, everything else was scoffed except the wheat.
Fussy little devil's 😄

What a shame. But pretty typical!

Ewww, we can’t been seen to be eating anything new, now, can we?? 🤣 I wouldn’t give up too quickly, though. Keep trying, you might get lucky.

Honestly, my guys like the wheat grass seed heads but sometimes they are just not interested. I guess its like me with ice cream - I love it but I don't want it every day! Whenever you see it, pick some and they'll eventually nibble.
