Hello all. Has anyone got any thoughts on mixing turmeric & milk thistle?

Sorry sweetpea, I just give milk thistle on its own. Hope someone else can help.

Are you asking if they are safe to take together, sweetpea, or whether anyone here has used them together? They definitely can be combined and often are in holistic liver detox supplements. I know lemonora was using both for one of her birds a while back, not sure if she still is. She has very limited access to any veterinary services and certainly not anything avian. I can’t remember the reason why I suggested it to her but will see if I can track it back.

Perry has so many things wrong with him & so many supplements that may help, that I wonder if any can be combined safely. I used turmeric & cayenne pepper in water when he injured his leg a few months back & I'm sure that accelerated the healing. I have also read that turmeric can be good for seizures (he's still having them) but milk thistle is also good for seizures from the point of view of helping the liver. We don't know the cause of the seizures so I thought it might be an idea to throw the two of them together. Alternatively, it could just be a lump randomly pressing on a nerve in which case probably neither of them would help! Just managed to get a vet visit booked for next week so if I remember, I'll ask her too.

Just looking back through some conversation with Lemonora, she had more success using a concentrated capsule of the turmeric in powder form and sprinkled over the food. She found that added to water it had a strong smell which may have been why her budgie wouldn’t go near it.

Perry doesn't mind any turmeric smell though it's probably pretty diluted. He drinks a lot - borderline diabetes (that was when he was at 'D' in the avian medical encyclopedia... )

The vet came yesterday & as expected, I forgot to ask her the Turmeric/Milk Thistle question. However, she left some (expensive) capsules to be sprinkled on food - Nutramarin+. They are apparently more effective/faster-acting than Milk Thistle in the water (which BTW she agreed I should up the dosage on, having reduced it due to the strengths fiasco!) Anyway, when I checked out the capsules, the ingredients are: SAMe (?), Silybin (Milk Thistle), Turmeric. So, I guess that confirms that the two can be combined! My next wonder is if I can just sprinkle turmeric on their seed rather than pay out an extortionate amount for the capsules!

What did she suggest the dosage for the MT should be sweetpea?

What did she suggest the dosage for the MT should be sweetpea ? She wasn't specific! I told her I had reduced to 1 drop per 30ml (based on 3 drops per 100ml) due to the strength fiasco. Prior to that I was giving them about 4 drops per 30 ml, so, with her go ahead, I'll probably do a gradual increase up to the 4 drops again. (Using 30ml as a measure just because that is marked on the water bottle). Bear in mind that Perry does have significant health issues so the 3 drops per 100ml is probably still fine for a 'maintenance level' amount. If anyone is wondering what I'm talking about when I refer to "The Great Milk Thistle Strength Fiasco", please refer to this thread: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/21007/milk-thistle

SAMe: www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-same/art-20364924You’ll see down a bit that it is used to treat depression, liver disease and osteoarthritis. You could try to find a human supplement with the same ingredients in the same ratio as they are bound to be cheaper than animal/bird specific, or if this is a vet who you can have the conversation with, ask if there is a cheaper alternative.

Some more information from my vet regarding the Nutramarin+
"The main ingredient in Nutramarin+ is actually s-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e), which is a free radical scavenger in the liver i.e. what takes the toxins away. Milk thistle is converted to a similar product eventually - it creates silibilin, which is less potent than SAM-e but does the same job."

That’s a better explanation than the one I read; thanks sweetpea. So they are all good things that work together in the liver. Is it a prescription-only med, do you know?
