Over the past couple of weeks one of our two budgies has had loose poos, ranging from green and sticky to white and watery and now back to green and sticky. There is a lot of poo getting stuck to the feathers around his bum, but there is no sign of blockage. Here is a picture taken this morning (just before I cleaned the feathers). There is no change in his demeanour, he is active, vocal and flying around as usual. Diet is mostly seed with a small amount of fruit or veg daily. His cage mate eats the same thing and has no symptoms whatsoever. Any suggestions for how to treat this? I am desperate to get on top of it before it develops into something more serious, we’re quite far from an avain vet. Thanks for reading.

At the bottom of this post, on the right hand side, you'll see the word Desktop.
Select Desktop and you'll be presented with this page in desktop mode, and you'll see the button you need to add images to a new post.
Welcome to the forum. I hope your bud will be ok. What are their names?

What are their names? Thanks for the help on that! I’ll also try to get some photos of the droppings this afternoon. Their names are Tweety (so imaginative) is the white one and Benji (green). Tweety is just under a year old and benji about 1.5 years.

Here’s an image of the droppings. Sorry for the quality. The poop appears quite grainy and watery.

You know I was just looking at tweety closely and noticed his beak does seem to be large in proportion and in comparison with benji. Will try to take photos to show the difference. Can this happen if his beak is to long and what can be done about it? Meanwhile I just had another go at cleaning his bum as the feathers there were quite matted with poo. I’m using damp paper towel and baby wipes, is there a better method? I’ve also offered him a bath but he’s not interested!

Comparison photos of beaks. Tweety’s (white) is definitely much bigger. Can’t believe we never noticed how much it’s grown. In answer to earlier question, veg wise they eat mainly broccoli, cucumber, coriander, apple, pear, occasionally salad leaves. They have a cuttle bone and mineral block but don’t show much interest in them.

I'm no expert but I'd say that beak is a problem and it's overgrown due to another problem (possibly liver related?).
Someone might give you more explicit advice but I would be booking an appointment with a (hopefully avian) vet asap.
If I'm wrong, please someone correct me quickly!

His beak does look overgrown and I know it can be a sign of liver disease…..but as I say, others on the forum would able to advise more. Try gently wiping his bottom with cool boiled water on a cotton wool pad…….I would remove the fruit and veg from the cage for now too. I think you may need to see a avian vet, do you have one locally?

Thanks loz and ladybird for the replies. Oh dear, thIs sounds serious. Is liver disease usually congenital or caused by lifestyle/diet? And can it be treated/ how is it treated? Will have a look for vets, don’t think there’s one local to us, we’re close to both Liverpool and Chester. Think the nearest one I saw listed was in Northwich, Cheshire, around an hours drive away. Trouble is taking him in on a weekday will be difficult.

Please don’t worry, it could be many things. The more experienced members will be able to advise better. He is young to have liver disease…and even if it was…yes it is treatable. Just remove the fruit and veg for now, it should help.

How are his toenails - can you get a good picture? I would suggest you not use baby wipes as it could leave a residue which could be harmful if he preens that area. As ladybird suggested, use damp cotton wool. If that doesn't seem to clean him enough, others will have additional suggestions. He will need to see a vet to trim his beak.
