Sam and Olly have a lovely swing bought from Karen at the Natural Bird Compnay. Both of them love the leather to chew on and lately Sam has been attacking the ties with gusto but I have noticed him chewing on very small pieces in his mouth and, I presume, swallowing them. Is that ok ? obviously it is very small pieces but I have no idea if it would pass through ok or block something. Having written all of this I know that Karen would never make something that could harm a bird but I don;t know if it is nrmal for birds to eat leather ...these smilies are so small I can;t see them properly but hopefully that is a smile lol

I am sure you are right but I think I would remove the swing until you can get a definite answer……

Yes, I would also remove the swing. Look carefully at the bottom of the cage looking for those tiny bits of leather. I'll bet if you ask Karen, she could make you a swing with no leather.

Karen emailed me this morning and said... Beaks love to chew on leather, but they are rarely able bite through it and are unlikely to eat it. They may roll some small bits around their tongues but then discard it. It's a natural product and would not harm them. Goos news to hear and when I look at what Sam is doing he isn't eating as such but, yes, playing with it on his tongue

Yes, good news and Karen would know. Budgies, even the males, like to chew and shred stuff. Now you can relax and just let them chew away!
