Our aviary will pick up the street light from the window in the inside aviary where the birds will be....we were considering covering it at night as we thought the light would bother them....so should we not cover it..... How much light comes in at the night from this window. They need some light in the night as well.

Do you use timers for your lights then?

I have a night light which is a very low wattage red bulb and it is on a timer to come on just before it starts to go dark and then goes off again after the sun rises. I have been using this for about 8 or 9 months and never had any trouble with them.

Do you use timers for your lights then? yes, night light comes on at 9-45pm,main kights off at 10pm,i always set the nightlight to come on earlier as the birds seem to see it as a signal that the main lights are about to go off and go to perch in night mode.

That's what I wanted to say when I asked how much light the window lets through in the night There is just enough light that it shines off the back wall of the indoor flight....so we will leave that window alone....(darn and I was all set to get designer curtains for the budgies..... ;D )we have also put in a solar light for days when there is little light in the winter....we have used the same sort of solar lights in the garden and they work a treat.....

The problem i see with solar lights Kath, being,if the sun don't shine, the lights don't charge up.we have them at the backgoing up to the aviary [by the steps] and in periods of cluod/rain they don't light up at night.
