I've been thinking about this. Skysmum's recent acquisitions have prompted much thought. - budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/post/322688/threadBased upon my observations - stress for the bird being on its own for a month and my lack of long-term success in maintaining the hand-taming of a bird once it is introduced into the flock ... I no longer see the point in me acquiring one bird at a time in order to make hand-taming easier. The only reason for one-to-one training of a singleton budgie in this way thus disappears. I only wish I had come to this realisation a year ago! Of course, this only applies to me. I realise other budgie owners will have very different experiences and outcomes.

I'm going to get one more budgie to even the numbers at eight. Not committing to any more!
(Just like I said at six budgies.)

One advantage of trying to hand tame a new budgie during quarantine is that the budgie gets to know you and that you are not a threat. Even though the hand taming doesn't stick when you introduce the new one to the flock, the newbie doesn't have to learn from the flock that you are ok and may come willingly to perch on you and not be afraid of you.

This is very true. Herman perches on my head and hand now, although he usually needs Mr Hibs to show him it's OK. And Finrod has landed on me a couple of times now.

Finlay hand tamed well during her quarantine month and then carried that on fine after meeting Barney. She was scared of nothing though!

I think it depends on how long you can have one-to-one time with a budgie. Mr Hibs was a singleton for several months and we have an unbreakable bond now.
