It's the first night for Pip in his new Hamberley cage. The cage is great and Pip has gone in and settled with no problem at all. However, it's just dawned on me his old cage cover is not big enough to cover it. I can also see, that because it is so big and in a corner, covering it will not be easy. Has anyone devised a clever way of covering a corner sited Hamberley they can share please? I am happy to buy and /or make anything that will work and be feasible for a single (5ft4" and not particularly agile) me to use on my own .

I have an Elegance cage, which is basically two Hamberleys side by side. A single, non-fitted sheet works for me. You would probably need to fold your sheet in two or the Hamberley would be swamped. It's a bit low-tech, of course. I roll/fold the sheet up the front and sides of the cage during the day and reverse the process at night but I am 6-foot so it's easy for me.

Do you uncover the top of your cage during the day, I think I could make something to work if It's ok to leave part of the top covered. I wouldn't be looking to cover the back and side against the walls, so could fix sheet or similar in place on say 1/3 of the top, then fold or roll to that. Do you think that would be ok?

Yes, the sheet covers the back third of the top of the cage during the day but leaves the front two-thirds open. The sheet drapes down the back of the cage against the wall, which gives a bit of counter-balance and helps keep the sheet in place. For extra stability, I have placed a few weighty items on top of the sheet at the back. It all works pretty well.

I have something very similar to the Hamberley. While I don’t cover the budgies, the other (same size) with the noise maker I cover with an old large sheet thrown over the top.

I have made a cover out of light weigh black cotton material for my Vision cage, well I say made I just hemmed it and that was that ! They are covered but with a little gap just in case they move during the night…I live in a city so there is always light outside….and they have been fine with that.

Thanks for your input everyone, I have a spare dark coloured sheet so I'm going to try making that work.

Just a quick update. I ran with the idea of using the sheet but found it difficult to fold back because of my lack of reach. In the end I cut it down and hemmed it so it would cover top, front and one side, with just a little wrap round to the second side and back. It was still difficult for me to manage so I stitched two pieces of offcut fabric to the top (one on each end) to make channels and threaded a 24cm length of rod into each. I can now use these as handles and find it easy to lift the cover on and off. Once off I just roll it up round the rods and pop it on the shelf under the cage for the day. I thought I'd share this as the rod idea may well be useful to others.
