Hi everyone! Just wondering, I am thinking about getting some tonic seed to get my budgies into breeding condition. Is that a good choice?

Hi everyone! Just wondering, I am thinking about getting some tonic seed to get my budgies into breeding condition. Is that a good choice? Nicola Hi a good healthy mix diet of seed, dry, soaked & sprouted. Fruit, veg & eggfood will be better & cheaper than any so called tonic seed which will also contain a mix of filler stuff that smells & looks good but is of no extra benefit. Yours B.J. ::)l PS Some seed mixes are like Sausage, if you knew what was in it you wouldn't eat it....

I try to avoid expensive brands and buy individual seeds and mix them myself. I can control the different seeds quantities and the cost is less as well.

I always condition my birds to breed and one of my main ingredients is tonic seed, used it for 50 years with great success

Thanks heaps !!! I have heard that if you leave egg food for more than 12 hours or so it will go rotten and our budgies eat it they will get sick. It tht the same with dry egg food? Nicola

It is the moistness that breeds the bacteria, Nicola. The dry stuff can be fed as is, over seed or over veges etc, but once you have added water to it, get rid of it regularly, yes. Bacteria need moisture to grow.

Dry, non moist egg food can be left for days. Check the manufacturer's instruction. The one I use is from Versele-Laga and can be left as long as seeds. Moist egg food should be removed within few hours depending upon the weather and temperatures, due to reasons Hezz mentioned. Hard boiled eggs are the best egg food, especially for chick rearing hens as it is easier to turn into crop milk. There are a few recipes in the feeding and breeding section, As well as on Barrie's Breeding Page.

Just to clear that Versele-Laga Egg-food has a few types. Some should be served moistened.

Thank HEAPS everyone! I as Brian knows (I think) I have recently got a aviary. I have 6 budgies: Tess she is a recessive pied I think and she is about 5-6 years old. Dave is Tess's mate. He is a normal green. He is about 8-9 years old. Georgia is turning 1 in May. She is an opaline cinnamon light blue. Gilbert is Georgia's brother. He will also be turning 1 in May. He is a normal green. Lilly is Georgia and Gilbert's mum. She is 2 this year. She is an opaline cinnamon light green. And finally Romeo. Romeo is about 3-4 and is a blue and white recessive pied. We are hoping for him to pair up with Lilly. Do know what colour chicks Romeo and Lilly would produce? P.S. Tess and Dave don't actually have fertile eggs. We let them lay though. They are kind of foster parents if something goes wrong. Georgia and Gilbert won't get a nesting box for obvious reasons:)

I wouldnt let a hen that is 5-6 years old lay eggs, she is past her egg laying days and your just taxing her.
