I'm getting two new budgies on Sunday. Mothers Day gift from my kids. It will be a 25 minute ride home. Soooo, they will have to be caught to put in my carrier. Then the ride home. Then trying to get them into the cage. I have a new cage coming on Wednesday or Thursday. Then I will have to get them into the new cage. I'm so worried about stressing them out. It just sounds like a lot doesn't it? Instead of trying to get them from the old cage into the new one can I just set them free to find the new one? Will they be drawn to the food? I can put them into a small room to do this. Any suggeations?

Welcome Maggie333 and congratulations on your upcoming adoption by two new budgies! If it were me, I would concentrate upon getting the budgies settled into their temporary cage and keeping them there for a few days until the néw cage arrives. Once they are transferred to the new cage, I would keep them there until I felt certain they consider the new cage "home". This will be when you have seen that they know where their food and water is and have spent at least two nights there, possibly more. I don't feel confident letting budgies out of the cage until I know they'll want to find their own way back into it. That's just me though. You will likely receive different advice from more experienced owners and you may find that works better for you.

PS I'm lucky in that I am able to place the travel cage and the next cage I use side by side, open door to open door. The budgies can migrate in their own time from the small, boring cage to the larger, fun cage without me having to grab them and without them escaping into the room. As for budgies finding their own way into an unfamiliar cage, even with the lure of food inside, I feel that's a bit chancy and may possibly lead to stress for budgies or humans or both.

I would try to line up the doors of the two cages, taking the food out of the old cage and putting it with a couple of millet sprig pieces for bribery into the new cage and see what happens. If nothing over a few hours you can always give them a gentle shoo from the back of the smaller cage to encourage them to find the doorway. Of course if they are tame already you may be able to just get them to step up and shift them over either on your finger or on a spare perch.
