yesterday morning I took the cover off of Penny's cage and could not see her at the back on her usual bedtime perch. I looked all around the cage, including the floor - fearing the worst. My heart leapt. Then I looked up and there she was, at the front staring at me! Penny, the terroriser

Oh no, that must have been a fright. So glad she was perfectly fine. Penny, your mum’s just had a heart procedure. Giving her a heart attack would not be a good idea! 😅

She's such a beautiful lady even when she's playing tricks on you!

They never chirp at that moment, do they? There's never a "hey I'm over here, mum". They just stay silent to prolong the torture!

That's right. I remember when I came back home and couldn't find Abbie, years ago. I shouted her name several times and asked all the other budgies where she was, they were tight-beaked. Snitches get stitches, I am sure I heard one whisper. Then I realised she'd been eyeing up a spot near the bookshelves. Sure enough she had fallen down a gap at the back. I let her out, she must have been there at least an hour. She just flew off squawking at me. They never chirp at that moment, do they? There's never a "hey I'm over here, mum". They just stay silent to prolong the torture!

If I could change one thing about domestic budgies, I'd get them to call out when they are in trouble. I understand why wild birds don't do this but our beloved pets ... well, it *would* help.

And whilst typing this, Hector was just crying out in alarm and distress. I found Squeak standing on his tail and she was beaking him. I gave her a look and she backed away.
No one messes with my Hector, not even privileged hens. He doesn't help himself though, he didn't try to get away and he didn't move even after I drove off Squeak. There's "passive" and then there's Hector.

Silly Hector, he's a pacifist man.
Glad you saved him from the naughty Chocobo.

I think you meant Squeak ... but yes, he does get "moved along" by Chocobo on occasion. It's not malicious with her though, it's just policy. Squeak on the other hand has a mean streak.

I think in my head I swapped the names, isn't that odd. Maybe I just expected it to be Chocobo! Policy? ha! she sounds like a government official now. Or a mobster, keeping up appearances. I'm glad Penny was fine. I've had a few scares like that with Dexter only to realise he was right in front of me!
Some budgies seem to really panic when their tails are touched. Criswell used to shriek whenever Dexter pulled his tail. I was always relieved that was all that had happened as it sounded much worse.

Quite a few of my budgets shout the house down if the tail is touched. Hector sounded like he was being murdered earlier. Mind you, his wings were being nibbled by Squeak at the same time she had hold of his tail so I don't blame him.
