I almost stepped on this dear little soul the other evening, he was right next to my back door. Ive never seen one in my garden before, we have loads of frogs and toads which never fail to make me jump when im doing a bit of weeding but this is a first. A smooth Newt i believe

I'm glad you didn't step on him, what a cute little fella.

We don't see newts very often here - they hang out where its damp and dark such as in caves. The ones we see are dark tan in color with light blue spots - oops that's a salamander not a newt.

It's very nice of him to come for a visit. I've not seen a newt in ages.

We had a small family of newts in the wildlife pond I built at my grandparents', once upon a time. Used to find them in the fishpond occasionally when I was cleaning it out. Love a good newt.
Dragonfly larvae, on the other hand, can go take a hike. As much as it was a privilege that a dragonfly chose to oviposit in our pond, I would rather the tadpoles.

Dragonfly larvae are ravening beasts.

They are. And just generally ick. But a lot of bugs give me the ick. I think it was just made worse by me having to relocate the pond that year, so I was fishing all the blighters up. I may have screamed at the first one, just from the shock and surprise (and the ick).
Speaking of odd visitors, a Silver Y moth just came in and sat on the window above the herbs. I managed to shepherd it out and it decided to just sit on my finger for a bit. And of course as soon as Ant went to take a photo it flew away. Clearly takes after the budgies.

I was surprised to see him tbh, we used to have a large pond but when the grandchildren started arriving we filled it in, about 20 years ago now and i don't think anyone nearby has one. It has made me think that i would like to make another one, a small one

I may have screamed at the first one, just from the shock and surprise (and the ick). When I was an undergraduate I did a project looking at stonefly larvae in streams. I picked up a rock and there was a dragonfly larva underneath it, the first one I'd seen, and it gave me a fright! I just asked David what my reaction was and he said I 'recoiled in horror'. I think that sums it up quite well. It was the shock really - I wasn't expecting to find something that large under the rock.
