Hello everyone, I got a new bird a couple of weeks ago. He is a male budgie. So far, I have gotten him to step up on a stick, but not my hand/finger. The bird farm said he was hand trained, but he's afraid of my hands - so I am not forcing anything. My husband has an African Grey parrot (got as a baby in 1995) that is very bonded to him only - she tolerates me, sometimes at a distance. Hope to hear about other's birds, and learn from those with more experience. Thanks!

Hello Tweety is beautiful. Have you tried bribing him with millet to get him on your hand? Hold a piece of millet between your thumb and forefinger and very slowly put your hand in the cage . Try and slowly put the millet near him ….if he is frightened, back away and just sit still. He will eventually want to taste the millet. It’s all about taking things very slowly with buds…lots of patience needed but you will get there in the end.👍🏻👍🏻

Ladybird has a good suggestion about millet. Also, do not leave millet in the cage all the time. (Pet shop employees often do.) You want millet to be a treat that the Budgie can only get from you.
Some owners also do the same with seeds; never leaving those in the cage. However, a few users at this forum have advised me that seeds should be a regular portion of food, not a restricted treat.
