The Lokster has never been fond of the wild cockatoos hanging close to the house, but since the move I feel he has become overly scared of them. A couple of times now, when they have been feeding in a tree close to one of our windows he has screeched off, flying madly around the room and then scuttling purposefully under either a bedside table or the bed itself. The table is a bit lower so that’s his preferred place and doesn’t always come out when I offer a helping hand. He looks pretty cute in his hiding place but I do worry about his mental health. Pulling blinds isn’t always an option and the cockatoos are here to stay.

Fear is a terrible thing, I know this first hand on the occasion I have had Buddy, (my Brother's dog) and fireworks have gone off, he is absolutely terrified. I feel for Loki, and his fear of the Cockatoos, you have a predicament which I wish I could help you with Hezz 😔

Poor Loki. I hope you can find a way to help him not be quite so scared. Is he scared of them when he's outside in the aviary?

There they would walk along the top rail of the deck to just outside the kitchen window, and Loki’s perching tree was just inside the same window, so little more than a metre apart though it be with a window between them.

Poor Loki. I hope you can find a way to help him not be quite so scared. Is he scared of them when he's outside in the aviary? A good question, and you’ve got me thinking. He certainly yells to let everyone know they are around. I think, to add to my comment with jellybean, that there might be a perspective element to his fear. In the rooms with the big, wide window and door opening where he can see more of the outside world, he yells, flies off and perches but doesn’t hide, similar to how he behaves in the aviary. In the other rooms there is a relatively wide window, high up on the wall but not very deep - about 0.5/0.6 metre so he only gets a glimpse of outside, and there isn’t anywhere high up for him to perch in one of those rooms. So maybe to him it seems as though the cockatoos come out of nowhere if they fly past.

And if he think they can appear out of nowhere maybe he's worried that they might appear out of nowhere inside the house too.

Magic portal cockatoos! I'm sorry you're having trouble with him, Hezz. Hopefully you can find a solution. It must be horrible to feel scared and have to hide so often.

Magic portal cockatoos! I'm sorry you're having trouble with him, Hezz. Hopefully you can find a solution. It must be horrible to feel scared and have to hide so often. Luckily it hasn’t happened often, just three times now, and I have taken to using the blind in that room when we are in there, but I would hate for him to become anxious and afraid every time we go in there. He’s been spending more time with the little boys just chilling out while I get on with outside chores whether they be in the aviary or in their room, and I feel he is getting better at entertaining himself, not so much yelling for me, so I’d hate to see him become clingy and needy now when things have been working well in the other direction. There is one particular tree close to the house that the cockies feed on at this time of the year and these are the birds he sees. I’ll have to stay more vigilant in future.
