Hi
Just wondering, if a breeding bird is sick let's say female-(crop infection or etc ) and needs medication. Can medication be given? Would it be given to the female directly? Or to the male since he feeds the female anyway?
I'm not in this situation, I just wondered.

Surely if the female were sick, it would be isolated and not breeding anyway? Even if not isolated from its mate, it shouldn't be encouraged to lay, or raise chicks. Laying and raising chicks is such hard work for the hen, it would only make her more debilitated. I can only see this leading her to an early grave.

Oh of course if she were to become sick before laying..but hasn't anybody's hen who is already raising chicks become sick? For whatever reason? What happens then?

Any medication which maybe good for hen, can harm the chicks. The possible ways are...
Foster the chicks to another pair. OR Let the cock feed the chicks if they are big enough and isolate and treat the hen.
Best of luck with your hen.

I agree with BB. I am not an expert but what is good for one, may not be good for another (what is good for the hen, may not be good for the chicks.) I would recommend what BB said. Your could even hand feed them if you were happy to give up a lot of your time. Good luck Nicola
