I am gradually coming around to the idea that I need more females in the Flock. It's not like I want (or need) more budgies - scratch that, it's not like I have space or money for more budgies - but current flock dynamics are being to create a germ of concern.
With four females, I should have four pairs, with eight unpaired male budgies remaining. Smudge & Mhoram are a fairly solid item but there is no other consistent pairing. Squeak is really a bit of a Greta Garbo, Maddy Prior is sometimes associated with Gurgeh, sometimes not. Boba sometimes associates with Gurgeh but not consistently.
I have four lads who are being a bet of a pest to any pairs that form up - Finarfin, Perry Rhodan, Whistle and (occasionally) Prothall. Prothall may actually be trying to connect with Mhoram rather than Smudge, to be honest, they are old friends. The rest of the boys seem content as they are.
My estimate is I could need a minimum of two new girls and possibly four. Most days I talk myself out of this but the other day I answered an advert on the Pet Rescue site I frequent. I was in equal parts relieved and disappointed that the girls had already been re-homed but obviously, I was very glad, too. They would have been perfect though, each was over two years old.
That's a complicating factor - I am principally looking for budgies two years of age or older.
I am back to checking with the rescue site - a very painful experience for me when my criteria for rescue is so limiting. It is not easy seeing budgies listed that I could conceivably take on plus there are all the ones that are outside of my catchment area. It's hard.
In other news, there was a lovely buttercup chocobo, female and four years old, up for adoption but alas (and thankfully), she's up in Scotland. I have no idea what I'd do if a female chocobo in my area came up. It would be a potential nightmare (and so, so tempting).
Just thinking out loud here.
