Jasper the cyclone is just starting to make his presence felt and while not a large or intense system, all we need is a strategic tree to come down for us to lose power. I may be off-grid for a while if there are more needy communities out there.

Stay safe Hezz. I hope you are not too badly affected. We have had storms recently in the UK. Trees down, big snow dumps localised flooding etc. However, like most things I think the average Aussie would consider them a ripple in a teacup compared to what you get!

Thank you, TPM and @blueelephnat. He’s slowed down over night by the looks, they are now predicting crossing the coast this evening. So far we are having normal tropical rain; the wind and torrential rain are still to come but we are not in the immediate crossing area, thankfully.

I’m baaack. Jasper was not a destructive system but by heavens he brought some rain with him. Slow moving and picked up plenty of rain on his way towards us. The system hit landfall and basically stopped. While records have only been kept for approx 100 years, rainfalls and river heights have exceeded previous high records by half as much again. Many places around us have measured rainfalls of over 600ml in 24 hour periods over the last couple of days. Today, thankfully and long may it last, the rain has finally stopped for us (other areas may still be getting it). All four range roads in the local area are blocked, either by flooding or land slides, the city of Cairns has been inundated as never before, airport closed etc. we lost electricity for three and a half days, also phone services and some close by are still without both as they are stranded between rising flood waters so emergency crews cannot get through. Places have flooded that have never been known to flood before. Our house has escaped unscathed, I’d have to give credit to the builder for some good forward planning and decent water diversion tactics. Now we just need to dry out. The BOM is still forecasting more rain to come so we daren’t packing up our gum boots just yet. It looks like it might be a rather bleak Christmas for many.

So sorry for those who may be impacted by the storm but happy you are ok. Hope you dry out soon.

Glad to hear that you came through this unhurt and relatively unscathed. I figured that rain had cut you off from the World but it's very good to get confirmation that you are all OK.

Hello, Hezz, I have only been on the Forum a short while, Loz was good enough to take my son's budgie Whistle which we had to re-home for my health reasons. I find the Forum fascinating, and as you are a Staff Member, Australian, Vegemite Lover, and have many interesting stories I keep up with your posts! I worked in NQ for a period, assessing effects of heavy rain on satellite communications, working at the Army TTE site at Innisfail, south of Cairns, chosen because it had the highest rainfall rate in Australia, 14 inches per hour in old money. It sounds like you may well have exceeded that due to Jasper! It is very good to know that you came through it unscathed.

So glad you're all okay Hezz. No power for 3 and a half days sounds rough. So happy your house survived it all.

Glad you are ok. I saw the flooding on the news this morning and thought of you. I hope there isn't much more rain to come.
