My 7 month old English Budgie has no interest in millet or any other treat. With those treats being so important for training how do I get him to eat any treat. I have tried fake eating in front of him, I have tried putting it in his cage between bars, and he has no interest, Please help!

It looks like the millet in his cage has been partly eaten? If I was you I would take it out and just offer it to him when you are training……Does he come out ? Just wondering how far you have got with the training. May I make a suggestion, I know those perches come with the cage, but natural wooden perches are better for there feet. Have you tried him with red millet, they usually can’t resist that. He is a beautiful budgie what’s his name?

Yes we are ordering wooden perches, no he has not eaten any millet it just came like that. I have only had him for 3 days, and he will get on my finger no problem, I want to let him out of his cage, but I don't know if he will come back, cause we are still early in training. He doesn't have a name yet.

I would take the millet out, they only need small amounts anyway as it’s very fattening. Try offering red millet , if he liked it it would help when you let him out…..offering it to him as an incentive to get him back in his cage if he doesn’t go in willingly. You say he is hand trained, so this should make it easier getting him back into his cage. When you let him out, be prepared for him making for the highest spot he can find. If he doesn’t fly back to his cage or doesn’t come to your finger…..try a cane to reach him. Make sure you cover mirrors up and be careful he can’t get behind radiators. If you have blinds, close them and if possible put stickers on the window if you don’t. I am sure others will be along with more help……

The best place to get red millet would a small local pet store near you. The second best place would be 'chewy.com', even better than Petco or Pet Smart. The supply from Chewey will be fresh and good quality.

Hang the millet beside his food pot or even sit it in the pot so that when he is hungry the millet is right there. Once he starts to eat it (ie recognises it as food) then you can remove the spray and use it as a training tool. If he doesn’t fall in love with millet then you will have to find something else that he finds irresistible to use for bribery.

Thank you for all your help, I let him out of the cage and there were no issues we didn't need any treat at all.

While everything may have gone well this time, it is still handy to have a treat to offer any time during the training/taming sessions.

Agree with Hezz. Just cos it went well this time, it always helps to find an incentive
