Alrighty, so, I've mentioned the plans for a bird room before. The intention for our bird room is to be a safe place for the budgies to be out exercising when we can't watch them, so that they don't have to be confined to their cage during the day. It's not intended to be the only room they spend their time in.
But... seeing their reluctance to go through doorways except for the odd occasions when they're calling back and forth to each other, I'm wondering if they would actually want to leave the room. And if they don't want to and just stay in there then that would be a little sad for us, and also limit their available space.
The next room along is intended to be our living room.
So other ideas we've discussed are putting in a large window in the wall between the rooms, which could be opened and folded back to allow easier access into the living room whilst still giving the budgies their own environment that could be separately controlled. If the budgies couldn't access the living room for whatever reason at that moment it would let us still see them too.
Obviously we'd put something on the windows so they'd be visible to the birds. And we'd have a curtain to pull across to block light when it gets later.
The other idea we've discussed is just taking the wall down and making one bigger room. The wall isn't supporting so we'd be fine doing that. We'd also move the door around so the whole thing was more square. It would mean they'd be more part of our every day life and have a larger flying space even if they chose not to leave the room to travel to the office. It also opens up possibilities for positioning the cage, etc.
The main issues we have with physically doing this are:
- we need to move a radiator
- we didn't think about this before getting the rewiring done, so we need to keep a pillar of wall for the living room light switch and cables (hopefully we can move the plug sockets onto this same pillar, but if not I guess we can always keep a 'power block' type thing and pop a table or something over it to avoid tripping) - we may not be able to remove the alcove wall at all, or if we can we would need a pillar here too
The other, big, issue we have with this plan is what to do about a space for the budgies. As the whole reason for having a bird room was to offer a larger space than a cage for them to play and fly in safely. So ideally I'd like a way to temporarily close off part of the room in a way that's safe for them. I'm wondering if we can get a floor-ceiling folding partition of a material that they can't get caught in, although we'll have to be gentle with it so it doesn't break. I don't want any sort of fabric because they might get stuck. It needs to be safe so they can be unsupervised.
And thus I'm here looking for thoughts, opinions, ideas, etc.
