My 8 year old budgie suddenly stopped talking and whistling. His poo has gone just white liquid overnight. He has been eating and drinking, playing with toys but his mobility has also lessened. I took him to a local vet who said he thought he had a chill. He prescribed antibiotics, the bottle says to treat as water for a week. It is labelled as “duphalyte solution”.
Has anyone come across this or does anyone have advice on why the talking and whistling has suddenly stopped. Nothing has been changed, same food, same position. I’m so sad, now he just sleeps all the time and only feeds if I give it to him personally.

Did the vet do a thorough examination, or not seem to have much of a clue? Avian vet or general? Some general vets are good with birds, others are rubbish. At eight years old he may be feeling his age. If he isn’t eating normally I’d expect his poops to be green; white would usually mean too many urates, pointing to his kidneys being the issue. Duphalyte isn’t an antibiotic; it is described as: Duphalyte is a supportive maintenance therapy in conditions of fluid loss, electrolyte imbalance and hypoproteinaemia in horses, cattle, swine, dogs and cats. Vitamins are sensitive to oxidising substances and pH changes, therefore do not mix the veterinary medicinal product with any other product. That’s taken from an old page of defra.uk. This seems more recent: www.vmd.defra.gov.uk/productinformationdatabase/files/SPC_Documents/SPC_112896.PDFI’d be looking for a second opinion, definitely consult an avian vet if at all possible.

Thank you, but Joey died a week ago. I’m so sad, he was my total ray of sunshine. My husband is really ill, I can hardly walk but Joey lifted me, his vocalisation and chatter kept me going.
Thanks for your reply.
