Hello, my eight year old ray of sunshine died last week, I’d love o know why.
One day he was playing and vocalising as usual and then, next day his poo was just white and he wasn’t himself. He was eating as usual but I was worried. There are no avian vets here but I found a generic vet who would see him. He thought he had a chill and prescribed medication. No improvement, I went again without Joey, didn’t want to stress him. Gradually weaker and weaker. He couldn’t grip perched in the end and was so light, he stayed on the floor, ate carrots and veg plus lots of millet.
In the end both claws just stuck out straight. He died after one week of this.
Anyone know what it could be. The vet felt no tumors.

The only way you could be sure of getting straight answers would be to have a necropsy done on his body. Almost any illness could cause he to behave how he did - birds are the best at hiding any illness as they are close to the bottom of the food chain and any sign of illness makes them easy prey and can even get them kicked out of the flock.

Firstly, I am sorry you lost your beloved budgie Joey.
We can only guess. If he could not grip the perch with both feet, I'd think he might have had a stroke or seizure.

I'm so sorry Joey had to leave. It's horrible when they go. I hope your many good memories give you some comfort.

Thanks for your replies. I guess I’ll never know why he left me. I do thankfully have lots of happy memories, he was such a character, I’ll never ever forget him. At the moment I can’t get another budgie to replace him, he could not be replaced and it wouldn’t be fair to any new pet for us want him to be Joey.
Thanks again.

Sorry for your loss. If it’s any comfort, Joey will now be at Rainbow bridge with my beloved Charlie and all the other wonderful budgies that have left us…..he will be having a lovely happy time….🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈

I am sorry to read about Joey.
If you do feel ready to consider another bird, they don't have to be a replacement...you can just take the opportunity to give another bird a good home!

No new pet ever replaces the one who has died. I think Joey would be very happy for you to adopt another feathered friend when you are ready, and would never look on it as him being replaced. And budgies have such diverse personalities that one could never be mistaken for the other.

Totally agree about the personalities. My Barney looks so much like dearly departed Hector, but their personalities are nothing like eachother! No new pet ever replaces the one who has died. I think Joey would be very happy for you to adopt another feathered friend when you are ready, and would never look on it as him being replaced. And budgies have such diverse personalities that one could never be mistaken for the other.
