Hello all, I have owned one make budgie for around 8 months and a couple days ago introduced another. I left the new bird in a seperate cage for a day. I got another make as I don’t want to breed. They are close in age. Today is their 2nd day together and they have been training each other’s face and heads. Yet this evening I saw my 1st budgie nipping at the feet of the new bird. I was a little shocked because they had been getting along really well. There was no loud yelling when this happened and it was only brief but it concerned me I guess if I see this start to be an issue I will separate the two as I have two large very nice cages, I wanted to speak about this to see if anyone had more to say about it. is it possible that this could just be a temporary thing I appreciate any feedback.

It is not uncommon for new birds to be given a lesson on who is the boss, which is what it sounds like yours is doing. They have probably been put together a little too quickly and your first budgie is still getting used to the idea of there being another in their space. You need to stay watchful to make sure that there isn’t any real aggression happening, that one isn’t making the other’s feet bleed for example, and monitor who they are together, being prepared to separate them if needed. Nipping at, pushing away, squawking at are all mild forms of discipline but anything causing actual physical harm needs to be addressed.
