Hi folks, I am new to the site, have recently bought 6 budgies whch have been indoors since November, have just built outside aviary so will be asking lots of questions. I am familiar with the larger parrots, Cockatiels and Lovebirds, but never had budgies before

Hi Birdinthehand, welcome to the Forum. Pics of the budgies will be most welcome!
I'm no outdoor aviary expert but I feel certain someone will ask you where the sheltered area of the aviary is to be located, to keep the budgies out of direct sunlight when they've had enough. Also, will there be an enclosed area that will allow the birds to shelter from cold weather? I don't see a double-door arrangement to prevent budgies from sneaking out of the cage when the door is open, may I ask your strategy for this?

Hi when the weather is hot I will be using alumi net to cover the sunny side of the aviary, they also now have roofing panels on which are tinted, I am also putting in a 4' long roosting box for them to shelter in . There isnt too much room for a double door arrangement so I am putting a net up which will cover a person and the doorway when entering

Well, hopefully we have someone looking in soon who has experience of outdoor aviaries!

Something that can work well as a holding/safety lock is a semi-circle of strong rod/ wire/strapping above the door to the aviary and attaching a bird-proof netting to this to fall down around the door with plenty of extra dragging on the ground (top covered, too, of course). Fix one side and half the other side to the aviary mesh leaving yourself enough space to get in and out and plenty of excess to pull it right around you before opening the door. It is not fool-proof but better than just a curtain over the door.
I’ve also replied to your other posts with some hopefully helpful tips.

Seems like you have it covered, a night box will be essential with our winters for sure, I had an indoor section which was heated in the winter but the budgies couldn’t wait for me to open the hatch into the outside even on the coldest days, they were free to come and go as they pleased, its drafts that are the biggest danger so make sure it’s as draft proof as possible. I’m sure they will be so busy enjoying their freedom in the fresh air they will do just fine.
