Our little man Toby is really struggling at the moment. As many of you know he has AGY and he's been poorly for a long time. Treatment failed, so we have been for a long time on this path of just watching and waiting and not really being able to do a whole lot. I've always maintained that if his quality of life seemed ok we'd just carry on. But he's just so poorly now. He sleeps for most of the day. Often squashing Barney up against the cage bars, probably to snuggle and keep warm. When he's not sleeping he spends ages sitting in the seed pot eating. But he vomits huge quantities of seed. I've just seen him bring up five pea sized balls of seed. Bizarrely through all this he maintains his weight between 40-44g. He just looks so terribly sad. I have been thinking for months now the time might be coming that we have to make that call and have him PTS. I just don't know how to know when the time is right. I don't think he is is pain as such, but his quality of life if just so poor. I'm at a loss really. It's just so cruel.

Blueelephant, I'm just so sorry. I have a feeling I know what you are going through as I went through a similar experience with Patch. The bad days began to outnumber the good days and I lived with the expectation of losing him one day - which I did. In retrospect, I think I may have let it go on too long. I don't know whether it was AGY but I believe he may have been suffering pain for quite some time. When I look back at it. Perhaps if I had to go through it again, I would have asked the vet to PHTS but it was hard because he often had an hour or two out of the day when he seemed to enjoy his life. But I don't know. I did know that Eeyore was devoted to the lad and I could hardly face the idea of Eeyore losing him, of me taking Patch away from him.
It sounds to me there is a good case for helping dear Toby across the Bridge but you are the only one who can see each day what is going on in any detail. I know in your shoes, if there were any moments in the day that Toby seemed to benefit from his continuing to live, I couldn't make that decision. If there don't seem to be any such moments ... perhaps I would call it.
However you look at it, my heart goes out to you, to Toby and to Barney. These are the very worst moments of the joy that is looking after these lovely creatures.

Would you consider a friend for Barney? I know AGY is in the mix but I suspect that AGY is more prevalent amongst flocks than most owners imagine.

I feel for you blueelephant , itβs horribly sad and making that call can be so very hard. I think if you feel he no longer has a good quality of life and suffering the ultimate kindness would be to help him along the way π

I would agree that if he has no quality of life and is just sleeping all day long and vomiting when awake then it doesn't sound a happy life.
Barney may be sad to lose his friend but he still has you.
Is Barney tame at all?

We had the same with Pippin's AGY, although over a shorter time. He was vomiting more and more often and spent most of the time just huddled up trying to keep warm. But he still had enough energy to pretend that he was okay, singing and telling me off when I gave him medicine. So I'm glad we made that call when we did, to spare him from being unable to try lying to us anymore.

Thank you all. Marianne Marlow Barney is tame, but he spends most of his time with Toby. He's going to have to learn to be quiet when I'm in meetings if he is going to spend his days with me. Ira I've been surprised how long Toby has coped. It just seems like it's been a gradual decline. He comes out and sits with us, but I can't remember the last time he was singing or playing π’

blueelephant, do you have a heat lamp that you can use for him? It is a horrible thing, watching and waiting and not knowing if you are doing the right thing, but a heat lamp might be helpful at this stage. Ginger tea might also be helpful for his vomiting. It is safe for birds, but I have not used it.
