Of course it is, Nicola. If you intend to breed. If they are just being friends that's fine, but unless you get rid of the nest boxes, you are going to have problems of this nature. You need to split your birds up, maybe buy some new stock and then you are in a situation where you don't have to worry about inbreeding. Why do you want to breed when all your birds are related? ?? In humans it is a criminal offence - does that help you see how wrong this is???

Yes if you plan to breed them then you will end up with inbred birds that are weak, deformed and unhealthy. There was a gypsy community somewhere in London, I think it was, or the outskirts, and they had bred back to their children and had more kids, and the end results shocked so many of the visiting officers that they required counselling afterwards. Cleft pallets, deformed limbs and faces etc. Matching genes from the same lineage over and over will result in very poor birds that will be constantly ill and probably deformed noticeably. Some pro breeders can get away with breeding grandfather to granddaughter etc but they have to be sure to outcross to a fresh bloodline after in the next generation in order to ensure strong healthy animals out if it. It's not something I'd do, I don't mate any relations, hence why I've had to minimise my flock so that I can buy in some fresh unrelated birds later. It's not worth the prospective suffering to the poor animals that result from it if something goes wrong. If they are just preening and feeding, it's not too bad, just never let them mate and nest. Regards, Soph.
