Sometimes hens force them out when they are going for second clutch. How old is the chick? Are there more eggs and chicks in the nest?

Hi Carl . I would try to get him back i the box first. You could always try handfeeding as well. Something like this would be good also: It is Barrie Shutts photo, not mine

Some babies are "forward" and keep coming out in curiosity, you get fed up of shoving them back in the box every five minutes! lol!
Have a ladder near the nest box hole so they can grip onto it and get back in, and also have a small old icecream tub on the floor, upturned, with a hole for them to get in and shavings underneath as s hidey hole to keep warm in.

Hi A hidey hole is usually a small upturned box,(Marg, carton)
with a little door cut out so the chick can sleep/hide in it.
Your hen will prob be already laying eggs by the time the
first lot of chicks are weaned. Yours B.J.

Hi Blocking the nest won't stop her laying unless
she's finished. Laying like having a baby can't be
put off just because the hospital is full. Yours B.J.

At 39 days old, the chick is too old to be forced back to nest box. In fact they are fully weaned and separated from parents at 42 days old.
