Hi,
If a hen does not incubate eggs for 12 hours and then they are fostered to other hens, will the eggs hatch?
Thanks,

Hi You don't say how many eggs are involved.
An egg can remain fertile up to 24hrs after being laid.
So if you put them under other females some may
hatch. A lot depends on what the temperature was
when you found them. Yours B.J.

Some hens start to incubate from the second egg, some from third egg. As eggs are laid every 48 hours, it means they are fertile during that period. It's just that hens keep rotating the eggs.
I know a breeders who takes away the eggs from the hens once they are laid and replaces them with dummy eggs. Once the clutch is complete, he removes the dummy ones and puts back the eggs. He keeps the eggs in a pot on wood shavings and rotates them every 12 hours. He never had any hatching problems with those eggs. So an egg can be fertile for a long time, and not just 24 hours.
Mick is right though, if the egg was left alone for 12 hours after the incubation was started then there is a slim chance for the egg to hatch.

The eggs can stay viable for up to seven days before nesting is needed.
