Read through some posts about trimming vents before breeding but someone has told me that you have to be carefull so you dont trim of /pluck out the guide feathers .
Now im thinking that maybe my past attempt of breeding them was such a failure because i possibly trimmed of the guide feathers but ive no idea what these guide feathers look like and have been told that both cocks and hens have them , when i was a kid and bred them with my dad he never trimmed them and they bred great but they were smaller budgies and have been told you dont have to trim / pluck the small types .
So could someone please tell me what do the guide feathers look like of anyone got any pics please .
David

Hi David Your budgies vents don't need trimming unless they are top notch show birds which have been bred with a super abundance of feather. which causes mating problems. Yours B.J.

There is nothing like guide feather. It's just a myth.
Trim the vent with scissors and then pluck them down to the skin using your fingers.

BJ is right here that big show budgies with heavy feathers require vent trimming. Normal pet size budgies don't require vent trimming.

I always trim with a pair fo sharp scissors, never pluck as the feathers grow back quickly.

when i started i had very little success , mostly unfertile eggs , barrie told me to trim the vent feathers , since i started trimming them my success rate is excellent, my birds are all pet type birds , i would advise any one to trim them,
