try them out. Death is about the only sure to tell if a bird is

I think that BB meant was that you shouldn't purposely put them down for breeding past these ages because they are more likely to suffer health problems.

Every budgie is different but this is the age after which the hens start to get egg bound and cock start to become infertile. Every budgie breeder knows this rule of thumb.
